At Alta, we believe climbing is for everyone. It’s a sport that challenges both body and mind, fostering resilience, trust, and empowerment. And what better way to celebrate International Women’s Day than by recognizing the incredible women in climbing—both on the world stage and right here at Alta?

Ladies’ Day is Back!

To honor International Women’s Day on March 8, we’re bringing back Ladies’ Day at both Alta Climbing and Alta Boulders!

  • Free rentals for all women, all day
  • ½ off start-up fees for new memberships

Whether you’re new to climbing or a seasoned crusher, this is the perfect opportunity to get on the wall, meet other strong women, and celebrate the climbing community together.

Women Who Have Paved the Way in Climbing

Women have been making history in climbing for decades, pushing limits and redefining what’s possible. Here are just a few trailblazers:

Lynn Hill – The first person ever to free climb The Nose on El Capitan in 1993, proving that technique and perseverance could conquer even the toughest routes.

Ashima Shiraishi – One of the strongest climbers in the world, Ashima sent V15 boulder problems before she even turned 15, showing that strength knows no age.

Angela Eiter – The first woman to climb a 5.15b (9b), proving that female climbers can perform at the highest levels of sport climbing.

Janja Garnbret – The first-ever Olympic gold medalist in climbing, Janja dominates both bouldering and lead climbing on the world stage.

These women—and so many more—have paved the way for future generations of female climbers. They’ve shattered stereotypes and demonstrated that climbing is about strength, problem-solving, and determination rather than sheer muscle.

The Women Who Make Alta Special

While we celebrate the icons of climbing, we also want to recognize the amazing women in the Alta community who make this gym feel like home. From our strong female members who send hard climbs daily to our incredible staff who help shape the welcoming, supportive environment that makes Alta special—we see you, we appreciate you, and we celebrate you.

Alta wouldn’t be what it is without the women who coach, set routes, work the front desk, lead community events, and support each other every step of the way. Your energy, strength, and passion for climbing inspire us all.

Why Climbing is Empowering for Women

Climbing isn’t just about reaching the top—it’s about pushing yourself beyond what you thought was possible. It builds:

Physical strength – Climbing works every muscle, improving endurance and coordination.

Mental resilience – Problem-solving on the wall teaches patience, persistence, and adaptability.

Community – Climbing isn’t just an individual sport; it’s about belaying, spotting, and supporting each other through every fall and every send.

Climbing is a space where women can challenge themselves, support one another, and break through barriers—both literal and figurative.
